After several delays due to security concerns, Microsoft has finally unveiled the first preview of its Recall AI feature for Copilot Plus PCs. Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel can now install a new Windows build that includes this feature. In this article, I will provide details about this new functionality.

Everything about Recall AI

Let’s begin with a brief backstory. Recall AI was first introduced at the Microsoft Surface and AI event in May. However, its initial release faced criticism due to privacy and security concerns. As a result, the rollout was halted. Now, Microsoft has reintroduced the feature, making it available in the Windows 11 Insider Preview for the Dev Channel. Registered users with Snapdragon-powered Copilot Plus PCs can test the feature.

How does Recall AI work?

Talking about the feature, the Recall AI captures snapshots of nearly everything you do on your Copilot Plus PC, essentially creating a photographic memory. It records activities such as documents, emails, images, and websites visited. With natural language queries, users can search for past activities, apps, or websites, or simply scroll through a chronological timeline of their actions. You might be wondering about privacy, right? Recall AI is entirely optional. You must opt-in to enable it, and if it doesn’t feel right for you, you can always choose not to use it—but remember you have to be a Copilot Plus PC user for this feature !

Privacy and Safety

As mentioned earlier, Recall takes snapshots of nearly everything you do, but this time you will have full control over what snapshots are saved and can easily delete them. For this a new icon will appear in the system tray as a visual signal whenever Recall takes a snapshot of your screen, so this will alert you. Furthermore, Microsoft allows you to exclude specific apps and websites from being captured by Recall. The company also claims that the feature can detect sensitive information such as credit card details, passwords, and personal identification numbers, and will ensure that these snapshots are not saved.

In addition to Recall, Microsoft has introduced "Click to Do," an AI-powered feature that enables interactive actions on saved snapshots. You can copy text, save images, or perform other tasks directly from the snapshots.
