We have been hearing that Samsung is coming up with a Tri-foldable phone for a while now. And today we hear something new and different. The company is also working on a foldable phone that bends both ways. Yes guys, I mean literally 360 degrees. Let’s dive into the details.
360-degree foldable device overview
Most foldable smartphones today fold inward, with the main screen protected by the outer shell, while a smaller external screen is used for basic tasks like notifications. Huawei on the other hand, has outward folding devices which wrap the screen around the back. However, both of these ideas come with a major durability issue since the screen is always exposed. But Samsung is changing the game with a device that folds both ways.
Here’s what we know
A patent image has recently surfaced online that shows the new design of Samsung's foldable device, which allows the device to fold in and out. This would eliminate the need for a separate cover screen, making a huge step forward in creating a truly all-in-one display that adapts to your needs, no matter how the device is folded.

For this to happen, Samsung is developing Flexible Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) display (which is something we heard back in 2020), supported by a layer of flexible polymer and an adhesive layer. These materials provide extra support ensuring the display can bend without damage. The device also employs separate fold axes and custom support plates which will allow the device to bend in both directions, thanks to a special lattice and stripe pattern.
While this is an exciting prospect, it’s still in the concept stage for now. But if it comes to life, this could be the most innovative foldable device yet. Samsung actually showcased a similar “Flex In And Out” concept in 2023, but we have not gotten any updates so we better hold our horses here too.
