Sony Alpha 9 III Overview
Design
The Sony Alpha 9 III has a “new ergonomic design” that uses lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy for its chassis. Similarly, it uses silicone rubber packing around the buttons, lens mount, and other areas. In terms of dimensions, it measures 136.10 x 96.90 x 82.90 mm.
Furthermore, it features a 4-axis multi-angle monitor allowing unrestricted angle adjustment when shooting. It is a 3.2-type touchscreen TFT LCD with a 2.1 million dot resolution, a wide colour gamut, and ample brightness. In addition, the Sony A9 III comes with an approximately 9.44 million dot OLED viewfinder that includes 0.90x magnification with a 41° field of view.
Sensor and Global Shutter
This is the headline feature of the Sony Alpha 9 III with the newly developed Exmor RS image sensor. It is the world's first full-frame stacked 24.6 MP CMOS image sensor with a global shutter system. This is to say, this sensor exposes every pixel at the same time producing no distortion.
Furthermore, it is a 35mm full-frame sensor with 35.60 x 23.80 mm dimensions. The Sony A9 III is capable of achieving a maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 seconds for stills, and 1/16,000 seconds during continuous shooting. Lastly, it also has a shading curtain that protects the image sensor from dust and particles when changing the lenses.
Under the hood, it comes with a BIONZ XR image processing engine. It minimizes processing latency while boasting up to eight times the power of its predecessors. Additionally, the Sony Alpha Alpha 9 III features composite RAW shooting that captures up to 32 images that can later merge these images to create full-resolution images. The A9 III also features real-time recognition autofocus with its innovative AI processing unit, as well as, 5-axis image stabilization.
On the video side of things, it can shoot 4K@120FPS without cropping. Additionally, the Alpha 9 III also records at 60FPS with full pixel readout and 6K oversampling for reduced moiré and jaggies. It also supports 5 GHz WiFi for fast file transfer via FTP. Meanwhile, the A9 III also boasts dual card slots with CFexpress type A and UHS-I and UHS-III SD card support. Lastly, it comes with a battery life of approximately 400 shots with the viewfinder or about 530 shots with the LCD monitor.
