Vivo launched its flagship phones the X200 and X200 Pro a while ago with Dimensity chipsets. Now, the company is working on the fourth iteration of its folding phone. According to the latest rumors, this foldable may opt for a side-mounted fingerprint sensor to reduce the thickness of the display panel. Let's take a look at what is known about the Vivo X Fold 4 so far.
Vivo X Fold 4 Rumours Round-up
One of the most trusted tipsters, Digital Chat Station, shared that he has seen Vivo’s upcoming foldable in person. He also mentioned that this year, four Chinese phone makers will release foldable phones that open horizontally. Though DCS didn’t name them directly, rumors suggest these include the Oppo Find N5, Honor Magic V4, and Huawei Mate X7, along with the Vivo X Fold 4.
In addition, DCS revealed a key change; to make foldable phones like the X Fold 4 lighter and thinner, they’ve switched to a "side fingerprint" sensor instead of the usual in-screen fingerprint scanner. This is a big shift for Vivo, as its earlier foldable(s) used dual in-screen fingerprint sensors for both the inner and outer displays.
What to expect?
Design and Display
DCS says much of the focus has been channeled into making the Vivo X Fold 4 light and thin. This isn't at all surprising considering its competitor Honor has set the bar pretty high by releasing the thinnest folding phones in the world. Having said that, with the side-facing fingerprint sensor reducing thickness, this upcoming device will be in the range of no more than 8mm in thinness.
The device will be able to withstand water exposure pretty well but the same cannot be said with dirt and dust since the Vivo X Fold 4 is rumored to arrive with an IPX8 rating.
The design appears to be unchanged with a large circular camera island on the back. It will have three 50MP shooters — a primary, an ultrawide, and a 3x periscope telephoto.
Under the hood, the upcoming Vivo foldable will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Other than that, the phone will pack in a large 6,000 mAh battery.
Vivo X Fold 4 Launch and Availability
Unlike its predecessor, this phone will be a standalone offering. This means there won't be a base and a Pro model like last time. We were expecting the Vivo X Fold 4 to arrive in the first quarter of 2025. However, the Chinese tipster says the launch has been pushed back. So, we might see the launch sometime in the second quarter of 2025.
